Recently, we asked our community for answers to the question, “What is the best way to love the Earth“? A few of our favorite responses follow:

By not taking it for granted and realizing that we are just visitors here, by realizing how beautiful it is and being grateful each and every day we are here.– Nada, Texas

EVERY DAY is earth day :) I love the Earth by treading lightly, loving many, caring for my self and appreciating all. – Janet, Michigan

Give instead of take. Who else occupies this earth and lives from it, that you can give something to? The birds? The people around you? Consider reducing consuming and giving something away to someone else that might need it. The reduction in stuff and clutter does wonders at liberation… a bonus in the deal I might add. Freedom in flow is the consequence … Just give it away! It feels good. – Sherrilene, Barbados

“When we walk upon Mother Earth, we always plant our feet carefully because we know the faces of our future generations are looking up at us from beneath the ground. We never forget them.” – Oren Lyons, Onondaga Nation – Daniel

The answers to their question lie within each of them. So I would say, shouldn’t you be asking yourselves? Look within, the answers are there. How do you love mother earth that has given you so much unconditionally? Nothing less than with all your heart as only you know how! – Armila, Kathmandu

Pay attention to the messages from your immediate environment. Know that what you do, or don’t do, matters. Think for yourself! Stop hitting the snooze alarm. – Ali, Milwaukee

The best way to love the planet is to love oneself and to realize the interconnectedness of each other and all elements in the world and the universe. It all begins with each individual. We need to recognize that we can determine only our own thoughts and actions, every other being has the free will to determine their own experience, even if it is harmful to his or her self, others, or the planet. And we must practice what we believe, rather than preaching. So be kind and loving to yourself, and that attitude ripples out to those around you, which ripples out to those around each of them, and so reaches the entire world. To be loving and kind also helps one live in a state of reciprocity — known in q’echua as Ayni — where one gives before one takes, takes no more than one needs, and treads softly on the mother. The best way to begin that movement and change the attitude of how society treats the planet and each other is to begin with the new generation: to show them loving kindness; respect them so that they learn to respect others; and to teach them ayni by living in ayni ourselves. – Innish
