The Young & the Healthless: How My Fitness Focus Matured As I Did

Okay, so Emily Welsh, a Master Instructor for The FIRM , was actually far from “healthless” in her 20s. But one look at her answers to health and fitness questions will tell you Emily — now in her 30s — is now in an even healthier, happier place.
1. What do you eat  on a daily basis?
Early 20s: Fat-free everything and baked potatoes with ranch dressing.
Now: EVERYTHING! Lots of greens, lots of protein, lots of veggies. (But no baked potatoes!)
2. Why do you work out ?
Early 20s: To look good in a bikini!
Now: For my health, for energy, for stress relief, to feel good!
3. What do you wear while you work out?
Early 20s: Tiny little sports bra , tiny little shorts (showing my belly!).
4. How heavy do you lift?
Early 20s: 15-20 pounds at the most.
Now: 20-25 pounds or more, and now I can execute at least 50 pull-ups from a dead hang during an hour-long workout. How’s that for strength ?!
5. What is your focus with your workouts?
Early 20s: To kill myself every time … lots of plyometrics  … lots of impact!
Now: To get an effective and solid workout every time … lower impact and a lot more stretching !
6. What is your favorite vice?
Early 20s: All of it … I could eat whatever I wanted and I didn’t gain weight.
Now: Dark chocolate … in small doses.
7. Do you do yoga ?
Early 20s: Does it have plyos? No? Then absolutely not.
Now: YES! It really helps with my flexibility , and I need it to stretch after all of the weight work! It is hard to get calm for yoga, but it does wonders for my hips and low back.
I think you can tell that I’ve gotten a bit wiser in my 30s, and I hope to continue that trend as I get older.
