It is in everybody's interest to seek those [actions] that lead to happiness and avoid those which lead to suffering. And because our interests are inextricably linked, we are compelled to accept ethics as the indispensable interface between my desire to be happy and yours.
Real love is not based on attachment, but on altruism. In this case, your compassion will remain as a humane response to suffering as long as beings continue to suffer.
To become enlightened is not just to slip into some disconnected euphoria, an oceanic feeling of mystic oneness apart from ordinary reality. It is not even to come up with a solution, a sort of formula to control realtity. Rather, it is an experience of release from all compulsions and sufferings, combined with a precise awareness of any relavent subject of knowledge. Having attained enlightenment one knows everything that matters, and the precise nature of all that is.
How much suffering and fear, and How many harmful things are in existence? If all arises from clinging to the "I", What should I do with this great demon?
O my Blessed God! let me climb up near to Him, and love, and long, and plead, and wrestle, and strech after Him, and for deliverence from the body of sin and death. Alas! my soul mourned to think i should ever lose sight of its Beloved again. O come, Lord Jesus, amen.
Friday, April 2 1742 David B. But now, my soul more frequently desires to die, to be with Christ. Oh that my soul were rapt up in divine love, and my longing desires after God increase! In the evening was refreshed in prayer, and with the hopes of the advancement of Christ's kingdom in the World.
Saturday, April 3 1742 I thought, if God would take me to Himself now, my soul would exceedingly rejoice. Oh that i may be always humbleand resighn to God, and that He would cause my soul to e more fixed on Himself, that I may be more fitted both for doing and suffering!
