While some celebrities will be arriving at this Sunday’s 81st Annual Academy Awards in limousines or — gasp — Hummers, some of the big names in Hollywood will be riding in eco-style.
Toyota and Econation, a green ground transportation company, are partnering to provide new 2010 Prius hybrids to bold-faced names like Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rosario Dawson and Adrien Grenier for the big night.
Some of the Oscar nominees also got a sneak preview of the new Prius, which boasts a solar panel on the roof to power fans to cool the car when it’s not running.
“The entertainment industry is working to influence the rest of the world to use more sustainable options for transportation,” says Ben Bloch, managing partner of Econation.
Meanwhile, charities in 53 cities will host official viewing parties during the ceremony as part of Oscar Night America, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ grassroots outreach program. These parties will feature the live broadcast of the show (hosted by bushfire fundraiser Hugh Jackman) and feature “Hollywood style party elements” such as red-carpet arrivals, local celebs in attendance, paparazzi and live entertainment.
Proceeds from the parties will directly benefit charities like Ronald McDonald House, American Red Cross and Special Olympics. Since the inception of Oscar Night America back in 1994, the program has generated nearly $24 million in funding for charitable organizations.
