About two years ago I started the process of cleaning up what I was putting on my body, not just in it. Your skin is your largest organ; everything that goes on it ends up in you; so anything that was going on my skin was subjected to intense scrutiny. Sixteen months ago I finally ditched my face wash, and started using the Oil Cleanse Method.
In brief: The Oil Cleanse Method uses clean, natural oils to dissolve the dirty oils on your face while moisturizing in a way that helps your skin regulate how much oil it needs to make.
Sounds intriguing, right?
You will need a bottle of castor oil, a bottle of carrier oil (jojoba or olive oil are great for all skin types), and something to mix them in. Optional ingredients are essential oils such as tea tree oil (great for acne prone/oily skin), rose hip oil (dry skin), or myrrh essential oil (aging skin).
- Mix your oils. You can do this in your hands each time, or in a little bottle to make enough for multiple washes. The exact ratio will depend on your skin, but the more oily your skin the more castor oil you want. For oily skin, try starting with 2/3 castor to 1/3 carrier oil; for dry skin, do 1/3 castor to 2/3 carrier; for normal skin, try half and half. If you are adding essential oils, add just a few drops per “serving.”
- Pour a dollop into your clean hands and rub your palms together, then gently spread over your whole face, massaging gently for a minute or two. Allow the oil to sit and do its thing for another minute.
- Wet your washcloth with very warm water; you want it to be hot enough to loosen the oils, but not so hot as to be uncomfortable. Hold your washcloth over your face for 30 seconds to a minute, then gently wipe away the oil. Rinse your washcloth, and keep wiping gently until all the oil is removed.
- Enjoy your clean face, and your soft skin!
The best part of this is that it is so versatile. It can be easily customized to work with oily/problematic skin (mine!), combination, normal, or dry. I suggest making very small batches of your oil mixture at first, until you can find your correct combination. Then adjust throughout the year as needed.
I still break out, but much less now that I’m using the OCM. My favorite part is how much less oily my skin is. My poor skin used to be an oil slick by the end of the day; now I can go a few days between washings if needed. My skin just isn’t making the extra oil. After a 2- or 3-day adjustment period, my skin was dewier, but less greasy. It just looks and feels better.
Normally I wash about 3 times a week, and just give my face a quick warm water wipe-down the other nights (I don’t wear makeup, which allows for those non-wash days; oil, however, is a great makeup remover). My oils are jojoba, castor and a few drops of tea tree.
So, no more products for me … no more hopping from cleanser to cleanser to find something that works. Instead I’m finding soft, dewy skin the natural way. With oil!
