Well this is a title I suspect he’d rather not have!

It was announced today that British Prime Minister Gordon Brown causes more greenhouse-gas emissions than other major European leaders, reports the French environmental magazine Terra Eco.

According to the mag, Brown’s official trips resulted in the emission of more than 8,400 tons of carbon dioxide. Runners-up are German Chancellor Angela Merkel with 7,400 tons, French President Nicolas Sarkozy with 7,100 tons and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero with 6,700 tons.

Although Sarkozy flew more than Brown, the British leader caused more carbon pollution because he flies in larger or less fuel-efficient jets, says the mag.

Time for an upgrade, Britain.

Meanwhile on our soil, President Barack Obama is hoping to do more for the environment than any of his predecessors. You can read all about his New Energy for America plan on the WhiteHouse.gov site, but some highlights include putting 1 million American-made plug-in hybrid cars on the road by 2015, ensuring that 10 percent of our electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012 and implementing an economy-wide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 80 percent.

Looking forward to seeing what happens.

  1. It’s important for today’s leader to set a good example. Today more than ever. With president Obama, I think the American’s awareness will start to come round with regards to the environment.
