Join the green chorus: Blogs are democratic

It was slightly more than a year ago that a tech-savvy friend convinced me to add a blog function to my website. And a further three months until I could post my entries without him walking me through the process. To call me a Luddite is to be generous.

However, now that I’ve embraced the blogosphere, I’m delighted to be able to contribute to the Gaiam blog. The downside of life as an author is that so often I seem at work in a vacuum. I send out my books … and am rewarded with a deafening silence.

But blogging — and particularly blogging to an engaged readership — offers up the chance to have a conversation. I blog, you respond with your thoughts, info and opinions, then others chime in … It’s online democracy. It’s a green revolution!

It’s also a community. Gone are the days when women sat across from each other at a kitchen table, trading recipes and cleaning tips (though my mother was more likely to be organizing a political rally). So let this be our kitchen table — a place where we trade advice on things like …

where to find a farmer with grass-fed beef (better for the animal, better for the planet, better for you! Visit

how to keep line dried clothes from feeling “crunchy” (a 1/4 cup of white vinegar in the rinse cycle, or the same amount of Borax)

whether or not you can compost doggie doo (as long a you’re not using it on a vegetable garden — only inedible plants, please)

I’ll do my best to bring pertinent, thought-provoking notions on green living — and you do your part by adding your voice. Post a comment below! I can’t wait for the conversation to begin …

  1. I couldn’t agree with you more. Life just seems SO much busier these days, and all this online media, social networking stuff really helps me keep up with everyone’s daily lives while multi-tasking and doing a buttload of other things. I appreciate blogging and twitter for what its for – an engagement of thoughts and ideas with people that you’ve never even met face to face!
