Fall is here! And since colder nights are a natural sign for the body to start slowing down, it can be difficult to find motivation to work out this time of year. Yet it’s not an obstacle — merely a bump in the road on your exciting journey to a healthier body and lifestyle.
A big part of living a healthy life is to listen to what the body needs, and be OK with the changes it is going through. Let’s invite some new movement to play with, to get the body moving and the mind motivated again. Here are a few workouts I have seen getting a lot of attention lately that bring the fun into staying fit! And you can do all of them indoors!
1. Suspension Training TRX
These are traditional strength exercises performed hanging suspended from the ceiling. The core HAS to be involved, and you will be working your entire body because you use your own body weight as resistance. It is important to be properly guided to avoid risks. In my business of personal training, everyone seems to have a TRX strap available for anywhere and anytime training!
2. YOSPIN fusion
Mix 30 minutes of yoga with 30 minutes of Spinning for an excellent body-mind workout. The cardio-intensive cycling followed by flexibility-increasing yoga helps cross-train and condition muscles. Switching between the two activities can lead to injury, so a mindful stop and switch — waiting until the heart rate recovers before starting yoga — is imperative. If you don’t have Spinning equipment or yoga classes at your gym, go to a Spinning class, download yoga to your mp3 player, and do your own thing!
3. Hula Hooping!
Go back to the old days when you were hula hooping (or hoola hooping) in the playground! Did you think it was exercise? It can be a great cardio workout as well as core and abs all in one. It makes the workout fun, and who doesn’t want to have fun? It is said to burn about 400 calories per hour. It is of course very important to stretch before and after, but with that this is a safe and fun way to work out. There are hoop DVDs, but the easiest thing is to go to the nearest Target, pick up a hoola hoop and get going.
Do you have any indoor workout tips or favorite routines/methods to trade with others? Any fusion workouts you like? Any FUN workouts like hoola hoping you would like to share? Please post a comment below!
