Welcome to my blog!
It’s been nearly 30 years since I founded Real Goods, a renewable energy and ecological living company — and I have been living “off-the-grid” on solar and hydroelectric power most of the time since. I live on a 320 acre working biodynamic farm we named Sunhawk Farms. Here in the hills of Mendocino County, Calif., my wife Nancy and I (and frequently my 20-something daughters Sara and Ashley).
I’m an experimenter by nature and have always enjoyed using my home as a ‘laboratory of green living.’ We power our vehicles with biodiesel; farm biodynamic olives, grapes and fruit trees; keep an extensive vegetable garden which provides most of our food; and press olives into a very tasty oil. This year we also started keeping bees!
I’m also involved with the nonprofit Solar Living Institute, which brings inspirational environmental education to an ever-widening slice of humanity.
My blog entires will all connect in some way to how you can live greener. (You’ll find that I hate the word ‘sustainable’ as it sounds lifeless and devoid of passion.) I’ll write about my own green living experiences as well as localization, global warming, biofuels, the Solar Living Institute’s latest programs, new things Real Goods is doing, current green living trends and news …
I hope this blog will inspire you to apply my experiences and lessons learned to your own efforts to live greener. I heartily encourage your feedback and ideas. And I look forward to meeting many of you who make the pilgrimage to Hopland to visit our Real Goods Solar Living Center!
