Week 6: Water, Good for Your Body, Inside and Out

Summer is coming and this week I would like to invite you to put your focus on water. Whether that water is on the inside or outside of your body — it’s going to do you tons of good.

Drinking enough water [2] when starting a new exercise program actually helps you burn more fat [3], and if that wasn’t enough, it also makes us less bloated. When you’re properly hydrated, the body doesn’t have to hold on to water, so bloating and water retention diminishes [4]. A good rule of thumb is to drink half of your body weight in ounces. I squeeze some lemon juice in my water to make it more attractive to my senses.

It’s also the perfect time to think about water aerobics and swimming [5]. Water takes pressure off of the joints and ligaments, which makes water-based exercises perfect if you are overweight, have knee or other joint issues, or if you are pregnant, swimming is something you can do safely. Since you are moving your whole body while swimming, you’re doing one of the best fat-burning cardio exercises there is. Swimming [6] can also be a meditative workout. The repetitive motions, cutting through the water while it caresses the body, breathing in and out, can help you release the tension and clear the mind. Finally, swimming trains your lungs to work more efficiently, which makes the whole experience a well-rounded, highly effective workout.

Week 5 assignment: Drink up and dive in

This week, hydrate! Drink water throughout the day, and especially before, during and after working out [7]. Can’t get into drinking that much regular water? Try adding a splash of lemon or lime juice and/or some cut fruit or veggies. (We love water with sliced cucumbers!) Do you notice a difference in how you feel when you drink plenty of water? In how your skin looks?

I’d also like you to try and make it to the pool for a water workout. It can be an indoor pool or, if it’s warm enough where you live, and outdoor pool. (Just make sure to slather on some natural sunscreen first!) Swim a few laps. Enjoy the experience with all of your senses, knowing that it is one of the best workouts you will have this week [8].
