Week 3: Make Fitness Fun Again!

A while back, I had a client who was struggling with his weight . Unfortunately, he felt about as excited about exercising as he did about doing laundry. We dug into his athletic past and found that he had been discouraged by his physical abilities, which had turned into a near fear of moving his body.
We both knew that he would have to exercise to achieve his weight-loss goals, so I encouraged him to think about what physical activities he had enjoyed as a child , before the fears started building. After all, all children like to play.
Eventually, he found his “thing.” I went to his home one evening and found him dancing in his living room ! He was laughing, dancing, sweating, and a few months later he had managed to dance off 15 pounds. Even better: Not only was he getting physically fit, but the joy of moving was back.
If working out sounds about as appealing to you as a trip to the dentist, you need to re-kindle the fun in movement  — whatever that might mean for you. It might be dancing , finding a friend to walk  with and share stories, or going for a long walk or jog with your dog . You could even join a community softball or kickball team — you’ll get fit and remember the fun of making new friends!
Once you’ve “found the fun,” I’d like you to engage in your new activity regularly for the whole week. Find out what happens when that feeling of having fun comes back to you. Does it make you feel more energized? Do you want to do more? I’m betting you’ll agree that fitness isn’t a chore when exercise is fun!
