Week 2: Learn to Love Food

Happy woman with fruits and veggiesDiet. I shiver just hearing the word. Don’t you? How many have you tried? Most importantly, how many have failed you?

Food is always a part of our life experience. In my home country of Sweden, we socialize a lot around food. In the world of fitness, proper nutrition is vital for making progress and increasing energy levels. As a child, food is a necessity for growth and development, and as we get older, we become more aware of our diet’s impact on our longevity. So why then do we get lost in the middle?

In between infancy and old age, we develop a tortured relationship with food. Most people I know, including me, have issues surrounding food. From deciphering food labels to eating out to making healthy food choices, what we put in our mouths can be the most difficult decision we make each day.

Week 2 assignment: Learn to love food

That brings me to this week’s assignment. I invite you to create healthier eating patterns, which can help you celebrate food and eating (again), by rethinking some of your concepts surrounding food. There is no reason why we cannot enjoy our food experiences, after all, it is what keeps us alive and healthy, and gives us energy and even joy at times. For this week, try focusing on these three concepts and see if they help you fall in love with food (in a healthy, joyous way).

1.  Try to let go of any negative feelings you have about food. Think about food in this way: “The food I put in my body is healing my body and giving me energy. And it tastes good, too!”

2. Wean yourself from processed foods. Try to stick to whole foods that are closer to what Mother Earth provides to us.

3. Enjoy! Make your meal last for at least 20 minutes, and allow yourself to really taste the food. Notice the texture. Chew slowly and thoroughly. Stop eating when you feel satisfied but not full. Can you feel where that is?

I wholeheartedly understand how difficult this can be. I, too, get lost in a controlling web, and sometimes it is hard to find the joy in the things we have to do every day. Take your diary (if you haven’t bought one yet, I recommend it, it is going to be your guide book to yourself when it is done!) and write down these three concepts. Practice them this week, share them with your loved ones and discuss with me or your friends. Slowly integrating them into your life will make them attainable. Most of all, approach everything with an open heart and remember, you are on your way to a better, healthier and more joyous you!

    Thanks for your comment! have not released any Yoga dvds but I try to incorporate all styles in my teaching there is a little bit of everything in the other dvds. I do have my own yoga practice that I do a bit of everyday! Are you a true yogi or open to new things, like fusions and mixes of modalities?? Whatever the answer is, keep it up, make sure you enjoy it and stay smiling!

    I am pretty new to Yoga, I have a few DVD’s that I enjoy. I must say, however, your Cardio Fusion is the best investment I have made! I absolutely love it and have had great success with it.. 8 lbs. so far!! I have recommended it to many of my friends. In fact, a friend and I went to Target last night after she and I worked out to your video so she could buy her own copy. I am a little older than my friend and was happy that the work out kicked her butt too! Thanks for your help and let me know when you release more of your work. Debbie

    I just wanted to say thank you so much! I got your Scultpting Bar Work Out DVD at the local Jenny Craig’s and I love it. I work out with it every day and noticed great results right away. I’m in my mid 50s and never did this kind of thing before, but it turns out I really enjoy it and I can’t believe how I look now! And I feel great, too! Your DVD and bar have made all the difference. I’ve lost more than 25 pounds and I don’t think I would’ve lost so much or looked this good in such a short time if it wasn’t for you. I’m very happy and just wanted you to know!

  6. Since I was a teenager I’ve had a battle with junk food and overeating, your concepts are simple and easy to intregrate into daily life, they open my mind, and spirit to a new way of dealing with it.
    I just resently purchased your DVD Total Body Cardio, what an awesome workout. I’m still trying to master the express workout. I’m most impressed with the segment on the DVD when you talk about yourself, and your advice on begining exersise. With your fitness, university, and spiritual education, I am so excited for my fresh start. I have been exercising since I was 18, but for the past 5 years it’s been on and off, mostly off, with alot of bad eating habits. You and your vidios have been the first thing in years to get me excited again. I’m so inspired by your fitness, and your spirit. Thank-you!!! How do I find week 1 ect…. of this challenge?

    YOU guys are the exact reason why I keep this work up!! I honestly get such a happy feeling in my heart to read your messages, and to hear your joy and happiness about moving and life again!! When I get into a rut ( in know you probably think Im this super person haha but I promise Im as human as my neighbor) and start feeling that Joy of moving again, it changes my Whole perspective on life…how about you??

  9. A great article on food. We cann’t enjoy the food today because of we are surrounded by fast food and artificial mixed food. That’s why our taste has become. We should eat not only to eat but for nutrition and for fuel our body that why we can keep running in a busy lifestyle. Doctors suggest more and more fruits in daily diet ,because it is the main source of vitamin and nutrition. We should keep at least 2 servings of fruits and 5 servings of vegetables in our meal.

  11. I agree that healthy food can just be as tasty and even tastier than processed junk food. Starving ourselves does not work. Instead we should learn about nutrition and foods, can how to make food choices. Unfortunately they don’t teach much of nutritional science in schools. So we have to learn nutrition from books by health science doctors that we trust. In short, do what Michael Pollen says in his book “In Defense of Food” where he says “Eat food. Mostly Plants. Not too much.”

  12. Hi Tanja, Thanks for the article. One of the changes my husband and I are making for our family in 2012 is a food overhaul. We’ve rid meat from our diets besides fish, we’re eating cleaner and more colorful. We’re adding distinctive flavors for interest, and we joined a community supported agriculture program. And, this will be the first year we plant a garden. It feels SO good!
