Try Something New and Discover Yourself

As you may or may not know most of my fitness background is in dance then I added martial arts and yoga to my practices. I found that the new skills I practiced enhanced my ability in all other sports and activities and each sport, dance, or workout brought out a different part of my personality. When I am doing kickboxing I feel strong and focused and intense. When I dance I feel sexy, playful, and passionate. In yoga I feel centered, energized, and connected to grace and power. It is amazing how each sport or activity can unlock or awaken a different feeling within us.

Recently I had a friend in from France who is an amazing dance teacher and although her style of dance is far from what I normally do I wanted to support her and take her class. She was inspiring to watch. She was teaching a style called Reggae Jam, a combination of hip hop, reggae, and African moves. It was as if I had never danced before. She isolated every body part and had them going in different directions at the same time. I laughed so hard at myself as I tried to do what she was doing but I truly gave it my all. What was amazing was after that class was that my dance class was different. I was far from mastering the moves she taught but because I had moved my body in a way I had never tried to move before it unlocked in me something and that something was a fresh perspective on movement, dance, and expression. It enhanced my performance in my dance classes and opened my mind up to a new way of moving. It had been so long since I had actually taken a dance class and after that I realized how valuable it is to do things you are not used to doing and how it deeply impacts us on so many levels, much more than just the obvious. Go try something new, different. You don’t have to master it just get your self out of your usual way of doing things and I am sure you will be surprised and what you experience.

Love,

Patricia
