The Responsibility Factor

Responsibility [1]On Oprah Winfrey’s last show [2] she spoke about the many lessons that she has learned over the past 25 years. One thing she said really stuck in my mind. She said, “You are responsible for your life.” Now, I know that we all know that on some level, but do we really understand what that means?

I have practiced what I call “The Responsibility Factor” for many years, and I want to share with you my process. The moment anything happens in my life that is significant, good or challenging, I pause and ask, “What did I do to create this opportunity to grow”? Usually, when I ask that question, the answer comes quickly and easily. When it doesn’t, I sit down and “stream of consciousness” journal. I put down my fears [3], doubts, concerns, excitement and enthusiasm. What comes out always makes my heart smile, even if I see that I am on the “pity pot.”

I have learned that I am a co-creative force in the universe [4], and that when I get clear about what I actively create, I experience harmony and peace. It all comes down to perception. Am I looking at life from the viewpoint of empowerment or victimization [5]? If I see myself as a victim of circumstances, I have decided that someone or something else has the power, and I am helpless. When I stand in a space of confidence and assuredness, I see everything as an opportunity to learn and expand.

I am wondering where you are in your life. Do you get that you are the one you have been waiting for? Are you willing to take responsibility for your life and stop looking outside of yourself to gain anything? Can you let go of blaming anyone or anything for your current situation [6]? Is there something in you that absolutely knows that you are in charge of your experiences?

If the answers to these questions are “yes,” then you have activated The Responsibility Factor. If you answers are “no,” please pause and take a deep look at your beliefs around being powerless [7]. Take a deep breath and then say out loud, “I am a winner in my life. I live from a place of deep and profound joy. No one can take my bliss. I choose to be happy and successful.” These statements, or some like them, help to divert your attention from any distraction that is trying to make you feel dis-empowered.

This week, try out The Responsibility Factor process and let me know how it is working for you.

Please affirm with me: I am responsible for my life and therefore I choose to win!
