As I’ve started my spring cleaning rituals around the house and car this year, I’ve realized that I need to add some mental and physical spring cleaning to clear out the old and embrace a sense of peace and renewal within.
Pulling from my yogic practice, I decided to embark on the following three rituals to revitalize and refresh myself:
It’s the beginning of spring, when many of us become obsessed with cleaning out closets, drawers, books and clutter. I find it interesting that we are not as excited to embark on a road to “emotional cleansing.” Why not take some time this week to inventory old behaviors and patterns that keep us in a constant state of drama — and clean them out along with the dust bunnies?

My latest spring bedroom update: A breath of fresh air!
Hurray, we made it! With the vernal equinox today, spring is finally here — and I’m in my element! I adore a big spring clean in every sense of the word … breathing fresh new life into everything from my bedroom to my outlook.
People have recognized the vernal equinox for thousands of years with cultural rituals and traditions surrounding the coming of spring. The early Egyptians oriented the Sphinx so that it points directly toward the rising sun on the day of the vernal equinox. While I can’t top that, I am quite happy to bid farewell to winter; I feel like one of the little buds on the trees aching for the sun! So I usher it in very consciously with my own spring equinox rituals …
The “official” first day of spring may have been March 20, but with the cold weather, it certainly didn’t feel like it then. Now it seems like spring has finally sprung!
I may have “reached that age” when I appreciate each spring just a little more (or maybe it’s just my recent memory of the brutally cold winter), but the colorful spring buds are making me extremely happy this year. Another thing that makes me happy is the feel of a de-cluttered, freshly cleaned home, so spring cleaning is on my mind. Some of you may not have gotten around to this annual rite of passage yet, while others may feel ready for a second pass at it after all the recent rain (and the inevitable mud it invites in). Either way, before you start cleaning your home, consider doing a clean sweep of your chemical cleaning products first.

Consider this: The average home contains 500-1,000 chemicals resulting in indoor air quality that is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Yikes!

In most parts of the country, March has moved in like a lamb rather than a lion, and spring has sprung! Although a snowstorm or two might still prolong our spring fever, people everywhere are throwing open their windows and welcoming the season’s warm, fresh air and light into their homes. And, while this yearly practice brings with it a sense of invigoration and clarity, it also causes us to take pause and literally see our homes in a new light. Months of sealed-up windows, low lighting and indoor play have left our homes, um, a little dusty, mildly cluttered and in need of a pretty thorough once-over (or a twice-over for those of us who live with little paws — both of the child and the four-legged sort).
If your life is anything like mine, spring cleaning does not get completed in one fell swoop. Mine’s dragged out for weeks. But this weekend, my hissing air purifier reminded me of a few places germs love to hide out while we’re all distracted with cleaning out our closets, scrubbing our grout and weeding our gardens.
