In past years, I felt bad throwing out our Halloween pumpkins, especially if they were still in good form. So last year I decided to use them for delicious post-Halloween dishes. What says “fall” more than big, luscious, bright orange pumpkins? October is the season to celebrate them, and many communities do so in a big way. As autumn marks harvest time, so, too, do a slate of festivals that focus on fall’s bounty from the fields.
Add up all the chemicals that go into candy, face paint, costumes and conventionally grown pumpkins and it’s easy to see that Halloween wins the most-toxic-holiday award hands down. So it’s no wonder that there is so much information out there these days on how to make it greener. In flush times, following these green tips seems like a no-brainer. But these days, I’m looking to cut the fat from my Halloween budget.
