I’ve lost a pound in four days, and we’ve eaten healthy, organic meals the past three nights.
New diet? Nope. I just signed us up for organic produce home delivery.
I received my first delivery this week, and it’s already delivering much more than I had hoped for: a reason to try new recipes, eating fruits and vegetables I’ve never ventured to buy in the grocery store (hello, kale!), and losing weight in the process.
Also, I swear, the carrots just taste better.
I’m a bit of a fanatic regarding pure air. I once (single-handedly) moved a dresser into the hallway of a charming B&B because of the mothball smell (my boyfriend at the time was not impressed). Admittedly, it has never been easy being me/green — I smell everything! Synthetic perfumes, soaps, laundry detergents, “air fresheners” and other conventional “fresh smells” gag me. (I must have been a bloodhound in a previous life.)
This weekend we made our annual pilgrimage to the country to visit an apple house and a pumpkin patch. Our car was a good 40 pounds heavier on the way home, loaded down with an enormous bag of apples and a wheelbarrow full of pumpkins and squash. Ordinarily, I’d feel overwhelmed with having such a bounty in my kitchen (it’s always a challenge just to use up all of my Community Supported Agriculture share for the week before it goes bad), but the beauty of many fall vegetables is that they last for awhile — Mother Nature’s way of helping us stretch that last harvest through the cold winter months, I suppose.
It was with much excitement and trepidation that I picked up my first CSA share this week. The pickup was at a local Quaker meeting house, and I thought I was in the wrong place until I spied the steady stream of people toting greens-filled tote bags. I headed in their direction to find a harried-looking farmer, dispensing bags of veggies from huge plastic tubs.
