Hurray, we made it! With the vernal equinox today, spring is finally here — and I’m in my element! I adore a big spring clean in every sense of the word … breathing fresh new life into everything from my bedroom to my outlook.
People have recognized the vernal equinox for thousands of years with cultural rituals and traditions surrounding the coming of spring. The early Egyptians oriented the Sphinx so that it points directly toward the rising sun on the day of the vernal equinox. While I can’t top that, I am quite happy to bid farewell to winter; I feel like one of the little buds on the trees aching for the sun! So I usher it in very consciously with my own spring equinox rituals …

It is also a perfect time to detox your home environment. We spend much of our time indoors with our windows closed, so it is even more important to be mindful of healthy air quality. Consider this: The average home contains 500-1,000 chemicals resulting in indoor air quality that is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Yikes!

My latest conspiracy theory is that clothing companies stick the “Dry Clean Only” label on clothes because they think we’re all a little dim when it comes to doing the laundry. The label might more honestly read “Dry Clean Only Unless You Really Know How to Hand Wash.” But that label would have to be triple in size and, thus, itchiness.
You’ve probably read enough to know that dry cleaning isn’t the healthiest or greenest way to clean your clothes. The main culprit is the chemical perchlorethylene or “perc” which is used by most dry cleaners. The EPA calls perc a hazardous air pollutant and the International Agency for Research on Cancer lists it as a probable carcinogen.
