My sister Kathy is pretty green; in fact she is the one who got me into green living from a toxics perspective years ago. I was visiting her for the weekend recently, and as it often goes when we are together, our conversation touched on healthy/green news. I mentioned that she might want to check the personal-care product line she uses on Skin Deep, the online cosmetic safety database developed by Environmental Working Group, to see if it is as healthy as she assumes.

You’ve had “spring cleaning” on your to-do list for weeks now, but it hasn’t happened yet. Don’t despair; as with meditation and yoga, now is the perfect time to begin again (and again … ).

It is also a perfect time to detox your home environment. We spend much of our time indoors with our windows closed, so it is even more important to be mindful of healthy air quality. Consider this: The average home contains 500-1,000 chemicals resulting in indoor air quality that is two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Yikes!

Here are nine easy ways that you can detox your home, so you and your family and enjoy a healthier spring:

Priti non-toxic nail polish
Last night I went out with some girlfriends for a little spa treatment and I turned a few heads when I pulled out my own little travel mani and pedi toolkit, packed with all the essentials including my non-toxic nail polish and nail polish remover. After all, an eco-girl doesn’t have to be less fabulous to be eco-chic.

Although green is the new black and the stereotype of environmentalists as the socks-and-sandals crowd is fading, many of us still don’t identify ourselves as environmentalists. We’re not going to abandon our style, and we don’t believe hip equals green for the average Jane.

But if you think about it, being a virtuous consumer can actually make you more beautiful — and not just on the inside.

Applying lipstickThe Environmental Working Group (EWG), which created a cosmetics database outlining and analyzing the ingredients in tens of thousands of personal care products, recently revealed that much of our lipstick is still lead-filled — a year after first releasing such shocking news.

If we’re screaming for change, nobody’s listening.
