We are always looking to find the magic bullet—the thing that will fix everything for all time. What would be the fun in that? Where is the mastery and challenge in life when we just want to do something once and be done with it? We are always wanting to check things off the list. It’s part of being human. So how do we drop into commitments, and doing something better for ourselves? We must commit, but then recommit by making our new habits bulletproof.

Prep (Research Phase):

Be Specific

First, decide if this is a physical or mental skill you want to learn.  In the case of yoga, it most likely will be both! For the purposes of accelerating your learning, isolate your focus and attention on one at a time. Decide more than “I want to learn yoga.” Instead, decide, “I want a better understanding of the nadi’s and bandhas, and knowledge of their effect on the physical, mental, and spiritual bodies.”

AsparagusAs I watched my girlfriend plant the asparagus roots in the freshly tilled soil this past weekend, the thought finally hit me: I might yet stand a chance.

Seeds are amazingly simple in design for what they are meant to do. Soil, water, warmth and a bit of faith creates a plant that provides food, generates more seeds and nurtures the soil, all while cleaning the air and water. It was the cultivation of a few seeds that gave me a completely new perspective on absolutely everything in my life.

CommittedWe are now well into March and it has been more than two months since this year began. A lot of us made resolutions, promises and commitments to ourselves and others regarding shifting consciousness and behaviors.

I have been counseling a number of people who feel challenged with honoring their agreements. The truth is that the behaviors are stronger in the mind than the need to change. So, my question to my clients and to you is, how committed are you to being healthy, vibrant and expansive?

Just StartRecently, I was having a conversation with a new friend. We were talking about our shared feeling that 2012 is going to be an incredible year. It was exciting to talk about how very intentional we are about bringing our gifts forward to make a difference in this world. After a few minutes of conversation, she said, “Isn’t it crazy that people often only have these conversations and high intentions at the beginning of the new year?”

Man and woman having a relationship fightDear Arielle & Brian,

Earlier this year I met someone who I thought was my soulmate and I gave and gave and gave. I thought he also gave, but certainly not as much as I did, even though I was not keeping score. Shortly after we started dating he lost his job and turned to me for solace and advice, and then he left me abruptly, saying he did not have the emotional stamina and strength to reciprocate the giving I was demonstrating. I was left devastated and emotionally exhausted.

This month, I’m focusing on is commitment. Have you taken any time recently to stop and ask yourself: Am I really committed to living a life I love?  Sit back and take a look and your life, your body, your state of mind, and you will have your answer.  Your life is a reflection of all of your thoughts and beliefs.  If you really want something and you are committed to it and you have faith, you will have it.
