Can You Keep Your Gym Membership?

Posted By Chris Freytag On January 19, 2009 @ 10:22 am In Fitness, Health & Wellness, Weight Loss | 1 Comment

istock_000007670723xsmallI recently came across an article about a survey that I thought was inspiring and hopeful! Here’s the beginning of the article:

“A recent consumer survey finds that the majority of Americans are unwilling to give up their fitness club memberships in a tightening economy, but many are taking cost into consideration. The survey, conducted by Opinion Research Corp. and sponsored by Anytime Fitness, found that of those already belonging to health clubs, 60 percent said they will keep their current memberships. Another 23 percent plan to keep their memberships but downsize to more affordable health clubs.”

Even in a time of economic crisis, Americans still see value in maintaining their health and going to the gym. It’s money well spent … as the Spanish Proverb says, “A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools.” But you can still spend it wisely. If you’re debating whether to keep your gym membership or even take one on, make sure you’re paying only for the amenities you need and not for extras that don’t matter to you personally.

  • If you don’t need childcare or a spa, don’t pay for those extra niceties.
  • Paying for a gym that is too far away from your home or office is a bad deal no matter how cheap it is.
  • Do you love group fitness? Check out what group classes are offered at your gym. (Personally, I’m a group fitness junkie. I love to exercise with others.)

Bottom line, be strategic about your health club dollars. There is no one-size-fits-all (no pun intended) when it comes to health clubs and gyms. There really is something out there for everyone.

Stay healthy,

P.S. If you don’t belong to a gym, check out  some of our fitness DVDs [1] Gaiam.com and chrisfreytag.com [2]. I have so many people email me and tell me they love my DVDs and have lost weight with me. For less than $20, you can get a workout that can be used over and over! I’d love for you to exercise with me or any of my fellow Gaiam instructors.
