Shine On With Yoga

Posted By Michelle Finerty On April 21, 2014 @ 3:03 pm In Fitness, Personal Growth, Yoga | No Comments

[1]The other night, as I was driving home from teaching one of my weekly yoga classes, “Instant Karma [2]” by the Beatles [3] started to play on the radio. I’ve never really paid attention to the lyrics, as I’ve always enjoyed listening to the melody, but that night I was drawn to the chorus.

“Well, we all shine on, Like the moon and the stars and the sun, Yeah, we all shine on…
On and on and on, on and on…”

It got me thinking that we all need to shine. We all have unique traits and talents that set us apart from the rest of the world, yet most of us are too afraid to embrace these qualities because we are unaware of our own brilliance.

It took me years to realize what set me apart from other yoga instructors [4]and how I could shine, because I spent too much time comparing myself to others and taking the fluctuations of class attendance levels personally.

It wasn’t until I started paying attention to the tone of my inner voice, as well as the consistent themes that were in the feedback I was receiving from the participants in my classes, that I was able to find the confidence to embrace my inner wisdom and let it shine.

So, what is it that you need to embrace in order to shine? As our energy changes daily, so do our needs. Some days we are full of exuberance; other days we need to awaken the energy that is lying dormant.

When I’m feeling exuberant, I like to delve deeper into my yoga practice [5]by working on a pose that scares me and a pose that thrills me.

Wheel (Urdhva Dhanurasana) [6]

Wheel thrills me. It is the opportunity to connect with a deeper purpose, staying constant on the inside and allowing the ebbs and flows on the surface to roll off.  The wheel symbolizes the circle of life, the number zero, starting over, starting something new, and the wheels of change. Where is it going to take me? Where do I want to go? The quest to find the answers to these questions is thrilling!

Headstand (Sirsasana) [7]

Headstand scares me. Headstand allows us to see the world from a different perspective, cleansing our bodies by reversing the flow of oxygen and blood. It also requires a deeper appreciation and trust in our own strength…something that I have to admit has its good days and bad. I know all of the nuances of the pose, I know how to help others with the pose, I know the whys of the pose, and yet I always have a moment where my mind floods with fear at being in such a vulnerable position.

Sun Salutations [8]

When I’m feeling low in energy, I tap into the healing power of sun salutations. I can’t help but shine when I’m going through a sun salutation. The ability to tune in and ignite my spark by linking breath and body in a moving meditation is a rare gift. While in this flow, I’m warming up my body and igniting the fire from within, radiating through my heart, and sending that shining energy out into the world.

It is from these practices that I am able to find balance and take the seat on the throne of my life with dignity and grace, embracing my inner wisdom and sharing my love of yoga [9]with others.

What is it that you need to embrace in order to shine today?
