I love summer! If you were listening to this post rather than reading it, you would surely hear me shouting this sentence as loudly as I possibly can.
Maybe it’s because I was born in the crazy heat of August. (I have a theory that people tend to favor the season in which they were born.) Or maybe it’s because I practically lived at the pool and the beach as a child. Or maybe it’s because I can wear flip-flops every day during the warm summer months (the best “shoe” ever invented)! Regardless of the reason, I find so much joy and rejuvenation during the summer.
Here are my favorite tricks for making the most out of your S-U-M-M-E-R:
SPF: I love to be outside as much as I can during the summer. However, it’s important to use sun protection while outdoors, regardless of the time of day. Sunscreen has come a long way; there is a kind for everyone and every situation. A wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are musts, too. In addition to avoiding skin cancer, protecting yourself from the sun’s rays will also help ward off those pesky little wrinkles!
Up the fluids: I don’t know about you, but the suggested eight glasses of water a day just doesn’t seem to cut it for me on steamy, summer days. Being dehydrated can result in tiredness and sluggishness. So, I try to listen to my body, stay hydrated and prevent getting to a point where I feel parched. Water is the best option for hydration, and it’s so easy to add some healthy flavor to water during the summer. Instead of lemon and lime, I like to freeze fresh berries, mango or orange slices and drop them in a tall glass of water. I always go back for seconds!
Move differently: I really dislike being cold, and I tend to get in a rut with my workouts during the winter. However, when warm weather rolls around, I start to get that “cabin fever” feeling, and I know that it’s time for a change. For me, summer offers many more opportunities to add variety to my workouts. I really try to make it a point to take advantage of the warm temperatures and participate in activities that require me to move my body differently (like swimming). It’s very refreshing, and it’s a great way to revive my workouts!
Makeover your wardrobe: Okay, so this isn’t necessarily fitness related, but I think I agree with Stacy and Clinton (from TLC’s What Not to Wear) — you just feel better when you look better! A good mood and a positive self-image do wonders for mental and physical health. So, come summer, I like to add a few trendy, “feel-good” pieces to my wardrobe (including my fitness attire). It always gives me a little pep in my step!
Eat fresh: I cheer when I see those roadside markets open for the summer. Nothing beats fresh, local produce! The quality, variety and price are usually much better than what I find in the grocery store. In fact, some nights during the summer, we just fill our plates with all sorts of fresh veggies and fruits for dinner. It’s wonderful! Oh, and picking your own fruit can be quite a workout (think squats)!
Relax: We’ve become such a busy society; we rush and go and rush and go (speaking from experience). But relaxation is crucial for well-being. In the summer, I love to just sit on the porch with a good book or magazine in the early morning or late evening. Also, I try to make all my vacations and weekend trips opportunities to rest and have fun. Even a simple pedicure can be just the right “medicine” when I’m feeling stressed in the summer.
What about you? What tricks do you have up your sleeve to make summer healthy and fun? Summer days are nice and long, so don’t let the sun go down without doing a little something for your health!
