servant

May I become at all times,
Both now and for ever,
A protector for the helpless,
A guide for the lost ones,
A ship for those to cross oceans,
And a bridge to cross rivers,
A sanctuary for those in danger,
A lamp for those in darkness,
A refuge for those who need shelter,
A servant to all in need.

Your son is at five your master, at ten your servant, at fifteen your double, and after that, your friend or foe, depending on his bringing up.

The servant-leader is servant first.  It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.  Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.  The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant - first to make sure that other people's needs are being served.  The best test, and difficult to administer is:  Do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wise, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?  And what effect on the least privileged in society; will they benefit, or at least not be further deprived?

To be free from all egoistic motive, careful of truth in speech and action, void of self-will and self-assertion, watchful in all things, is the condition for being a flawless servant.
