A man is not poor because he has nothing but because he does nothing.

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.... I asked for health, that I might do greater things I was given infirmity, that I might do better things... I asked for riches, that I might be happy. I was given poverty, that I might be wise... I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.... I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life I was given life that I might enjoy all things.... I got nothing I asked for - but everything I hoped for. Almost despite myself my unspoken prayers were answered. I am, among men, most richly blessed!

Wealth to us is not mere material for vainglory but an opportunity for achievement; and poverty we think it no disgrace to acknowledge but a real degredation to make no effort to overcome.

Public money ought to be touched with the most scrupulous conscientiousness of honor. It is not the produce of riches only, but of the hard earnings of labor and poverty. It is drawn even from the bitterness of want and misery. Not a beggar passes, or perishes in the streets, whose mite is not in that mass.

A greater poverty than that caused by lack of money is the poverty of unawareness. Men and women go about the world unaware of the beauty, the goodness, the glories in it. Their souls are poor. It is better to have a poor pocketbook than to suffer from a poor soul.

As society advances the standard of poverty rises.

Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty.
