Power of Positive Thinking: How to Find Joy Within You

If you want to increase the amount of joy in your life, it has to begin with the way you love, treat and honor yourself. If you are reaching outside of yourself for people, things, food, drugs, alcohol or jobs to be your source of joy, you will be at the mercy of circumstance. Real power comes when you realize you can feel joy for no reason at all.

There are always things to complain about, but there are just as many things to appreciate and love. Being negative is so much easier than being positive, so you have to have discipline and practice.

Here is a great way to practice: brag and give compliments to yourself! Why? Studies show that we have 60,000 thoughts a day and that 87 percent of those are not only repeated but also negative. So unless we bring in some Sati and mindfulness and start shifting the habitual flow of negative thoughts to powerful, positive ones, we might lose out on knowing just how good we can feel.

Learn to brag about yourself

The next time others ask you what’s new, don’t settle on telling them you are fine. Tell them something that is really great about your life and yourself. This will not only help you keep your joy and appreciation alive, it will give others the opportunity to brag about their lives. Encourage them to tell you what great things they are experiencing.

Look in the mirror and compliment yourself

When you look in the mirror, tell yourself how great you are looking today. Find something to focus on that is worthy of a compliment. This may not be easy, but unless you make an effort, you will let that negative voice take charge. Every time you let the negative voice take charge, you are sacrificing your joy! Instead, sacrifice the negative voice so the joy can continue to grow!

Joy creates success

“Joy is your natural state. It makes you smarter, younger, more intuitive and healthier. It is the path to healing, enhances your immunity and changes your metabolism. Joy creates success, not the other way around,” says Dr. Christiane Northup in her book The Power of Joy.

Instead of sacrificing your natural joyful state, fuel it by bragging and giving compliments to yourself and others. It is a small but powerful way to find your way back to your natural state!

Exercise: “Yes, I am bragging. I am worth it.”

Practice the following affirmations and moves in front of the mirror:

  • Say out loud: “Yes, I am bragging.” Go to the pose of COMMITMENT: Stand with legs more than shoulder width apart. Reach your right arm straight up over your head while slightly bending your right knee. Keep your left arm bent at your side. Both palms are facing forward. Now switch your arms, reaching your left arm straight up over your head while slightly bending your left knee. And now keep your right arm bent by your side. Both palms are facing forward. Alternate your arms right and left four times with the affirmation for one minute. You are committed to bringing joy into your life.
  • Say out loud “I am worth it.” Go to the pose of PERSEVERANCE: Step on the left foot, keeping the right foot pointed to the side and extend your right arm in a fist high up to the sky. Now switch to the other side and repeat right and left for one minute. You are never giving up because you are worth it.

Now put the two moves together: “Yes, I am bragging. I am worth it” for three minutes, while looking in the mirror and smiling!

Memorize and repeat

Memorize the entire series below and then say it all day long:

Yes, I am bragging. I am worth it.
I am happy, and I deserve it.
I am committed to loving me.
When I honor myself, the world shifts around me.
I am brilliant. I am proud. I am sexy.
And I am allowed to use my power
To shine and to attract greatness.
I AM DIVINE!

When we honor ourselves, the world really does shifts around us. When you honor your brilliance, beauty and power, you feel good. How good are you willing to feel today? Spread the love by radiating it, being it, giving it and receiving it.

You are amazing! How do I know? We are all born that way, and now it is up to us to know it!

  1. People that think positive tend to live longer. The power of positive thinking is infinite. It gives us the ability to find balance in our busy lives. Great post. Great strategy. One of my favorite positive thinkers is Norman Vincent Peale. As you probably know he wrote the book, “The Power of Positive Thinking” back when people were working very hard just to get by and support their families. Be well and stay positive.

    Brandon – Thanks for the link. I too have found some pretty powerful thinkers out there, and I would have to say that my favorite right now is Lynne McTaggart, author of “The Intention Experiment.” I even had the opportunity to participate in one of her World Wide Intention Experiments on her site.

    The experience was truly amazing, and I’d recommend her book to anyone.

  3. I think there is some benefits to thinking positively but I don’t think it’s enough. You need to be able to take action in a situation. So I would say that having the right attitude combined with taking some positive action will create the right results.

  4. While I don’t like the word “brag”, I agree that it’s super important to acknowledge ourselves. Too often we can see the good in others but we downplay it in ourselves (I think it’s especially true in the US) but in the end, we’re all Children of God and deserve respect and recognition. Changing our thinking patterns to be as positve as possible should be everybody’s priority, I think. Since thoughts affect reality (as Quantum Physics now proves), this is how we will change the world for the better! If we want the world to change, we have to start by changing ourselves first and that begins by changing our thoughts. So if we want good things, then we need to think good (and positive) thoughts. Then I think these positive thoughts trigger the inspiration and motivation to take action.
