Miracles and Meows

Miracles and Meows [1]“Your mother has been telling me for 65 years that miracles happen [2]. I am now 84 years old, and I believe.” This is what my father said to me yesterday.

My father has been ill for several years. He spent most of the last year bedridden. One day a beautiful calico cat showed up. It was a wild cat. My dad fell in love immediately. It put a light in his eyes that had been dulled by the enormous amount of pain he has been in for years.

When I would call and ask about the cat, you could feel the smile on the other end of the phone. My dad had a reason to get out of bed. The cat would be curled up on his newspaper every morning. Every time he would make his way to the door, the cat would come running. Watching him with this animal was the sweetest sight in the world.

Two weeks ago, he went to get his newspaper, and the cat wasn’t there. Dad could hear the meowing cat stuck under the house. They called the neighbors for help. Here was my 84-year-old father, who has rarely made it out of bed in the past year, trying to shovel a cat out from under the house in sub-zero weather. The meowing stopped. The cat had frozen to death. My dad cried for the third time in his life.

He left the next day for a 10-day visit to Mayo Clinic [3]. He wasn’t concerned about the test results. With the loss of his cat, his sadness and lifelessness had returned. Yesterday, he returned from the Mayo Clinic. As he pulled into the driveway, he heard meowing.

The cat was still stuck under the house. He had been there for two weeks without food. When they got him out, the cat did somersaults with his frail body. My dad cried for the fourth time in his life [4]. “Your mother has been telling me for 65 years that miracles happen [5]. I am now 84 years old, and I believe.”

This beautiful, wild, calico cat is my yoga [6] teacher this week. The love and capacity of this cat in the most extreme of circumstances inspires me to be all I can be and show up with love in my heart regardless of the situation.
