Matt Damon’s Earthly Journey

I consider myself quite familiar with Matt Damon’s work in that I’ve seen all the Bourne movies and I’ve followed his humanitarian efforts like his relationship with the ONE campaign [2]. But I was pretty surprised to read that he narrates a PBS show about the environment … and has for eight seasons.

Clearly I haven’t been TiVoing the right shows!

In a recent interview with the Miami Herald [3], the Boston native talks about “Journey to the Planet Earth,” which explores the relationship between people and the natural world. In the episode he just wrapped — which airs March 18 — it’s all about the state of the planet’s oceans and how they’re now in danger of being depleted.

“What we liked about Matt is that he’s Harvard educated, so he’s a very smart guy,” said Hal Weiner, who with his wife Marilyn produces “Journey to the Planet Earth,” in the Herald article. He cited an incident that took place when Matt argued about some lines he was supposed to read in one episode, which said rising Chinese soybean consumption was leading to slash-and-burn farming in the Brazilian Amazon [4].

“He really objected,” Hal recalls. “He wanted to make sure we were not just bashing China. We had to bring in some scientists to talk to him before he’d do it.”

Added a laughing Marilyn: ‘”I really loved it that he wasn’t willing to just say something without it being confirmed.”

So I know what I’ll be watching on March 18. I’m especially interested because, while doing research for this, I discovered that there’s a whole segment about cod fishermen in New Bedford, Mass., and how much of their commercial fleet now lies idle. While that Cape Cod town isn’t far from where Boston-native Matt grew up, it’s also close to the vacation spot where I’ve been spending my summers for my entire life. I live for that saltwater. I love to put on my mask and look for conch shells and swim with schools of fish fluttering all around me.

Isn’t it an interesting feeling when something really hits home?

Have you ever watched “Journey to the Planet Earth”?

Which shows do you enjoy that focus on environment issues? Have any hit home with you, and why?
