Keep Your Mood Elevated to Reach Your Weight Loss Goals!

“I didn’t even know I was unhappy until people started commenting on my new bubbly lease on life,” says a client of mine who lost 80 pounds over the course of a year. Yet one of the most exasperating things about losing weight safely and healthfully is that a loss of two pounds a week isn’t always noticed right away by friends and family.

If the compliments aren’t flying your direction since the first of the year, you may need to give it eight to 12 weeks before someone notices that you are looking better. They may notice your new attitude or your new habits right away, but your body changes take time. The good news is that slow-to-be-noticed changes are much more likely to be permanent. The weight loss [1] you achieve on a two-week crash diet is an illusion, and the pounds will all come back in the next month. But the pounds you lose the slow and sensible way are real pounds, real inches lost, real habits formed, and real lifestyle changes that make you a different person.

So be kind to yourself and continue to forge ahead with your weight loss goals. Look at the big picture. Sometimes we get so caught up in the small details that we lose focus of the overall goal. So much of your success or failure depends on how you think [2]. Health and fitness is a three-part plan: It’s what you do, what you eat, and what you think! What you think is the most important component of the three — because the other two depend on it.

Try some of these “mood enhancers” to maintain positive thinking over the next few months and stay inspired to reach your weight loss goals [3].

  1. Start a daily journal. Sometimes just writing (anything) can relieve some stress, which can derail you and has been linked to storing more belly fat [4].
  2. Divide your workout into 2 or 3 mini-workouts, especially when your life seems out of control. A quick power walk [5] in the morning can jump-start your energy, and a quick walk in the evening can relieve the day’s stress (and take your mind off the ice cream sitting in the freezer).
  3. Treat yourself to a massage [6]. It is one of the best ways to release tension and toxins from your body.
  4. Laugh out loud! Listen to your kids’ jokes, watch a funny movie, or read a funny article. Laughter is a great stress reliever.
  5. Make sure to eat breakfast [7]. You’ll be surprised how good you feel mentally when you start your day with the proper fuel.
  6. Dance and sing. When people are asked, “What do you do when no one is looking?” a large majority say they dance or sing. So turn on the tunes, get shaking and burn some extra calories (this definitely count as one of your mini-workouts!).
  7. Take a bubble bath. At the end of a busy day, nothing beats a warm bath!

P.S. If you or someone you know has fallen off the wagon or gotten derailed from making healthy lifestyle choices, get back on track with my new book 2-Week Total Body Turnaround [8]. It’s a 2-week metabolism and mental makeover — not two weeks to reach your goals, but two weeks to get you started and prove to yourself that you can take charge of your health.
