July: Connecting to Creativity

Some of our favorite films from Spiritual Cinema Circle are those that connect us to our creativity and humanity.

This month’s feature film is the Emmy Award-winning documentary Journey of the Universe. Narrated by Brian Thomas Swimme, the film takes us on a journey through history and our connection with all of humanity.

Four Chambers is a documentary by Imanuel Goncalves following four real-life stories of compassion, courage, vision and wonder.

In Coda, a young violinist performing in a train station meets one person who truly appreciates her music. Filmed in Budapest by filmmaker Jonathan Tomlin.

Made in Belfast by Joel Simon and commissioned by Unlimited for London 2012 Festival, Macropolis is a short animated film for all ages, a story of two misfits trying to find their way home.

Spiritual Cinema Circle is a monthly DVD club that celebrates inspiring and thought-provoking films.

  1. I really wanted to like the inspirational short, “Four Chambers,” and to recommend it to friends. The film was indeed great…until it got to the segment of Dr. Ben Carson.

Carson is a fairly strident homophobe, who once joked that anti-gay bakers should put poison in ‘gay wedding cakes.’ When asked about this during a subsequent interview, Mr. Carson remarked that people who were upset over his poisoned wedding cake ‘joke’ were being immature.

It is also worth noting that the Southern Poverty Law Center–-which monitors hate groups across the US–had placed Carson on its Extremist Watch List, putting him alongside other dangerous individuals.

Mr. Carson’s disingenuousness and hatred pretty much undermine any point he would try to make about “wisdom” in the Four Chambers film. If his segment in this film were replaced, I would recommend this short film to others.
