Talk about hot wheels!

Former president Jimmy Carter will be doing more walking now that a thief made off with his bicycle.

The bikes of the 84-year-old politico and his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, were snatched from The Carter Center in Atlanta, home of his nonprofit group that works to advance human rights and alleviate unnecessary human suffering.

“They’ve probably been sold for a $10 rock of crack,” said Outback Bikes owner Peter Wicker, who gifted the first bikes to the first couple by in 2007.

Just over a year ago, the Carters, who like to two-wheel around Atlanta’s Freedom Parkway when they aren’t doing their humanitarian work, sent their old bikes to Wicker for maintenance. Wicker took one look at the battered two-wheelers and declared them unfit for the man who has built houses for Habitat for Humanity, urges people to conserve energy and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He replaced them with two $1,000 bikes free of charge.

No one has been nabbed in the theft of the first bikes.

Perhaps Lance Armstrong has two he can spare for the former first couple?

  1. It proves crime an occur to anyone. I hope someone gives him new bikes… though I’m sure he can afford his own.

  2. Hi,
We are currently working with the Carter Center on replacements. It is my hope that this news story brings to light the rampant loss of property to all of us. Bike thief is rampant in our community. I would also like folks to know that Outback Bikes promotes cycling in our community by providing bikes for inner city kids who would not have the chance to ride. We also support the local Velodrome and a host of charity rides.
    Peace
