How to Burn Major Calories in a Small Space

Pretty black woman practicing yoga

The total body conditioning class I teach is always packed — like 70 people. Each participant literally gets about a 3 x 3 foot area to move in, and we use a step platform, hand weights and a resistance band. I had a gal after class today come up to me and say, “We are packed in this room like sardines, but we still get such a great workout.” She’s correct. I often remind the class that we are burning like 600 calories yet barely moving out of our little space — that’s amazing.

The class is a combination of strength and cardio. Using the platform, we step up and down and do lots of creative athletic drills. We use the hand weights and band to do strength moves. We keep our heart rate up as we move to the beat of the fun music. I burn as many calories as I do when I run four to five miles — all within my allotted space!

“It doesn’t matter if you have a huge workout room or a small corner in your apartment.”

All this motivated me to blog about exercise anywhere, anytime. You don’t need a lot of space to burn a lot of calories. You need creativity! It doesn’t matter if you have a huge workout room or a small corner in your apartment — you can do it.

If creativity isn’t your long suit, try Gaiam’s Mini Stepper, Balance Ball, Pilates Total Toning Kit or CorePlus Reformer. No large space required, just the will to work hard and burn up the calories. Or, if you can find the space to lay down a yoga mat on your floor, you have enough room for a yoga workout. Try Gaiam’s Yoga for Beginners Kit or the new Yoga Weight Loss Workout Kit, which includes weights and a yoga fusion DVD showing how to add the weights to maximize your time as well as your space.

If a workout DVD isn’t your style,  grab an exercise band, step up and down on your stairs, or pump a pair of hand weights. You can do any of these while watching TV.

Bottom line: No more excuses.

It doesn’t take a lot of time or space to fit in a workout. Think outside the box — or I mean stay inside the box. Just kidding.

Stay Healthy,
