How Exercise & Food Can Change Your Mood

Yes, you can have it all, really!

How you eat, think and exercise dramatically affects your mood. You can break the cycle of unhealthy habits [1] and learn to have it all.

Make choices that help you feel good

I know that the foods I eat play a major role in my attitude, energy levels, health and aging process [2]. Knowing that my goal is to feel good all the time helps me make choices that support that goal. I know that eating refined carbs causes me to have more mood swings and lower amounts of energy. It makes me gain weight [3] and negatively impacts my overall health. It is too big of a consequence to pay for a three-second pleasure. It doesn’t mean I will never have a sweet again, but 90 percent of the time I don’t eat refined carbs [4].

Practice self-discipline

Remember that the way to having it all is by practicing self-discipline. When making promises to transform the way you eat [5], you must train yourself to keep your word and silence the negotiator, that voice inside your head that keeps telling you it’s “OK” to break your promise and start tomorrow.

Choose things that you can keep your word on no matter what. As you get better at it, you can promise bigger things. When you make your promise, remember these words: “No matter what.” Keep these words tattooed on your mind, and the negotiator will not show up as often — but you’ve really got to mean it.

Determine a goal for your body and health

It’s not just about fitting into your skinny jeans for a special event. It’s about improving your overall quality of life. The foods you fuel your body with impact almost every area of your life from your brain function to your libido.

Are the foods you are eating in alignment with your overall goal? What are your goals? Set some today. Ask yourself if you are taking care of your body the best way you can.

Take a moment to write down what your intention is for your body and your health. Start to look for people who inspire you who have great relationships to food [6]. Model and interview them. Simply ask them how they do it.

Simple ways to eat better

Try adding more vegetables [7] to your diet. If you already eat many vegetables, try new ones and get creative.

Oftentimes, the big culprit is portion size [8]. Keep protein like meat, fish and chicken to the size of a deck of cards or the palm of your hand. Also, eat more slowly so you can tell when you are satisfied before you are stuffed. Even using a smaller plate can make a big difference. Check in with yourself and see if you are satisfied enough to walk away.

Exercise: “Yes, I can have it all”

Eating with intention and awareness is eating the Sati way. Exercise [9] is the perfect compliment to healthy eating. You can support the positive changes in the way you eat by trying these intenSati moves with the following affirmation:

“Yes, I can have it all”

  • 2yes-c130Say aloud: “Yes.” Stand with your feet wider than hip-width apart to the pose of COMMITMENT. You are making a strong declaration that you are committed to making the changes you want to make. Extend your right arm straight above you and place your left hand by your hip. Bend your right knee. Switch to the other side. In a fast-paced tempo, alternate your arms for one minute. Say “Yes” every time the right arm goes up. If you really want to make that commitment, practice by reaching your arms as high as you can. Now add the positive feeling behind it. Yes, you can do it. Really go for it. You’ll be amazed at how committing to this one pose can shift your mood and your attitude.
  • 2desire-b227Say aloud: “I can have it all.” Stand in a deep V-squat, keeping your back straight and abs in. Make a triangle with your thumbs and index fingers in front of your heart. Passionately extend your arms away and toward you as fast as you can. This is the pose of DESIRE. Use this pose to call up the greatest changes you want to make in your body and your health. Keep the arms moving for one minute and keep saying, “I can have it all.” Desire is the fire for transformation. Keep your eye on what you really, really want. Put the feeling of desire into every arm movement with all your heart, and get excited to know that what you want is on its way!

Now put the two moves together:

“Yes” (COMMITMENT — say yes four times)
“I can have it all” (DESIRE — arms pump four times)

Repeat for two to five minutes. Each time, make the moves bigger and your voice louder. Declare your intention to keep your promises, no matter what! You can have it all! You don’t have to give something up forever. You’ll be amazed at how much your self confidence will grow by keeping the promises you make to yourself.
