Help for Insomnia: DIY Dream Pillows

Almost everyone has spells of insomnia [2], but some have more trouble with it than others. If finding the way to a good night’s sleep [3] is a quest, here are a few ideas you may not have tried.

The first is the homeopathic remedy Calmes Forté® [4]. I take it sometimes when I have to fly in bad weather, and it makes me feel like I am relaxing in a rocking chair and I begin to nod off ….

For another suggestion, try my Make-It-Yourself Easy Dream Pillow — basically a large sachet you fill with soothing herbs and essential oils [5] that will seduce you to sleep. This project is fun and the sewing required is very basic.

Materials:
2 pieces of good-quality cotton (preferably organic) [6], at least 6 inches square
Sewing thread and needle
2 pieces of muslin or natural fabric, at least 5 inches square
Herbs and a few drops essential oils (see below for tips on which ones to choose)
Pillow stuffing

Directions:
With the right sides of the cotton squares together, sew around three sides of the pillow, about 1/2 inch from the edge. Repeat for the muslin/natural fiber squares. Trim the fabric at the corners to within 1/4 inch of the seams to make turning the pillows right-side-out easier. Then turn the pillows right-side-out. Fill the muslin pillow with dried herbs. Don’t overstuff it because circulation is needed to waft the scent of the herbs into the air. Sprinkle just a few drops of essential oil onto the herbs. Fold in the raw edge of the muslin pillow and sew it closed. (Option: Close the seam with stick-on Velcro® or snaps.) Slide the herbal pillow into the larger pillow, add pillow stuffing, fold in the raw edge, and sew it closed (or use Velcro® or snaps).

Which scents to use:
Many herbs have sedative effects, perfect to be used in dream pillows when insomnia strikes [7]. You can add herbs to your dream pillow to enhance dreams or sensuality, too.

Herbs and plants that have a calming sedative effect: Catnip, chamomile, hops, lavender, lemon balm, passionflower [8], rose petals and skullcap.

Essential oils that have a calming sedative effect: Basil, geranium, jasmine, lavender, peppermint, rose, sandalwood and yarrow.

Plants for dream recall [9]: Frankincense, mugwort and rosemary.

Herbs for good dreams: Bay and thyme.
