Ground Yourself in Gratitude

The harsh tones of your alarm clock blare beside your bed and you can hardly believe it’s the start of another day. Your bleary gaze moves to the window, where the dense fog and darkness whisper that the sun is still sleeping soundly. You too are not yet ready to rise, to encounter the chill lingering outside the goose-feather comforter that wraps you tightly in a cozy cocoon.
You’re not the only slumberous soul who wants to slide back beneath the covers for just a few more hours on chilly fall mornings. It’s easy to find gratitude on a calm Sunday morning when you are cradling a good book or enjoying time spent with your family at the sunlit brunch table, but gratefulness in the face of hurried cold commutes and heavy holiday traffic can be much more of a challenge to find. The day brings us a tray of responsibilities that are not always as enjoyable as breakfast in bed. There are assignments to complete, errands to run, plans to make, people to see — wouldn’t it be easier to just forget about them and retreat back into restfulness?
During the hectic holiday season, we sometimes forget how each responsibility and challenge is an opportunity to manifest gratitude . We can be thankful that every moment is one when we can better who we are and who we are becoming. Here are a few reminders on how to live a life of gratitude , just in time for Thanksgiving !
Make a few promises of gratitude to yourself this holiday season. Write them down and keep track of those times when you fulfill any or all of your personal pledges. You can keep a physical journal, or try an online site like begr8tful.com , which lets you share your gratitude with the world!
I will be thankful for the hard work I put in at home and in the office, rather than focusing on the stress that work creates in my life.
I will be thankful for my body and the life it allows me to lead, rather than feeling guilty about a little overindulgence or relaxation.
I will be thankful that I have emotions to feel and to share, rather than trying to hide what I need and what I am feeling .
Also try to extend gratitude toward other people in your life:
I will be thankful for having friends, family, neighbors and co-workers in my life, rather than being overwhelmed by trying to fit them all into my schedule.
I will be thankful for getting to see the people I love over the holidays, rather than frustrated at busy traffic and traveling.
I will be thankful that everyone I know is different and offers something unique that helps to enrich my life, rather than getting caught up in disagreements and misunderstandings.
Imagine what changes you could make if you allowed yourself to be humbled by gratitude every day. Start now, and thank yourself for taking the time to consider a more positive and transformative outlook on life.
