Confession: I spend as much time searching for the perfect holiday gifts for my dachshunds, Molly and Milo, as I do choosing gifts for my parents. (Sorry mom and dad)!
I’m not alone.
The American Pet Products Association reports that 56 percent of dog owners and almost half of cat owners will buy gifts for their pets this season. Retailers know that gifts for our four-legged family members are big business, and they’ve stocked their aisles with stockings filled with bleached rawhide and plastic squeak toys. But this season, I refuse to be lured in by these items’ festive packaging. I’m going to walk right past them to find holiday gifts for my dogs that have less of an impact on the environment.
Here are three eco-friendly canine gifts Molly and Milo will find in their stockings on Christmas morning:
Tug-of-war toy: Bark for Peace takes sweaters destined for the landfill and transforms them into one-of-a-kind tug of war toys. The toys are braided and knotted for enhanced durability and come in three different lengths. $8 to $12
Organic shampoo: Molly and Milo will be looking their best all year long thanks to a bottle of organic shampoo from Haute Hound. It’s made from organic olive and jojoba oils that clean and moisturize — and it’s detergent free so it won’t irritate their skin or leave a chemical residue. $15.95.
Eco-friendly stuffed toys: The Deer Cane Squeaker is a must-have toy for pooches that love to play. The fabric is made from recycled plastic soda bottles and filled with non-toxic, recycled fill — and it squeaks. It’s made in the USA and machine washable. $13.95
