Last night I went out with some girlfriends for a little spa treatment and I turned a few heads when I pulled out my own little travel mani and pedi toolkit, packed with all the essentials including my non-toxic nail polish and nail polish remover. After all, an eco-girl doesn’t have to be less fabulous to be eco-chic.
Unfortunately, many nail polishes on the market still contain toxins including dibutyl phthalate (DBP); a plasticizer that disrupts endocrine function and is linked to some birth defects, and toluene and formaldehyde, which are suspected carcinogens. These chemicals were officially banned from cosmetics use in Europe, but the US Food and Drug Administration has stated that these chemicals pose no threat in low levels, and has approved these ingredients in small quantities for use in cosmetics.
But the organization Campaign for Safe Cosmetics disagrees. And, when I add up all the lotions, shampoos, conditioners, toothpaste, perfumes, makeup, nail polishes, and styling products I use in a given week … I think I might be tipping the scale on ‘low levels’ of exposure. That’s why I choose natural and organic beauty products whenever I can.
Check out Non-Toxic Priti Nail Polish and Non-Toxic Soy Based Nail Polish Remover created by New York City’s first organic spa. It’s free of known carcinogens: formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and toluene, making it safe enough for use on pregnant women and little girls.
With non-toxic nail polish you can do your mani and pedi in the comfort of your own home — or take your polish along with you to your favorite salon. Plus, they make great gifts for both my uber-sophisticate friends and my ‘green’ friends alike.
