East Meets West

I am in a small airplane on my way to the Mayo Clinic to do a satellite media tour with a Mayo Clinic doctor. We are going to talk about Integrative Medicine, and for me specifically, how yoga can help with many of the symptoms that patients deal with from their illnesses. The time has come for Western and Eastern health practices to merge, to find a united front in both preventative and curative health care.

Gaiam and Mayo Clinic have joined together to create 10 wellness DVDs that offer information and solutions to 10 of the most common modern ailments and health conditions. From back care to menopause, these programs teach us the facts and myths about these conditions with advice from the leading doctors of our time.

These DVDs also include solutions: Colleen and I offer meditations, restorative yoga poses, and yoga posture sequences that address each specific condition. A nutritionist, who offers specific dietary suggestions geared toward each condition, is also part of each program.

On another front, many senior yogis are putting their heads together to prime the yoga community for this merge. Distilling our knowledge in order to single out which yoga techniques work in the medical setting is a monumental task.

Alongside this research is the political problem of creating a national certification that we as yogis can support. Most likely, there will be numerous efforts … hopefully we can work at least with integrity and good will.

  1. I endorse GAIAM and Rodney Yee. This is a great post. My doctors are on an integrated medical team and I am so happy that the medical profession has realized that prevention can work. I love my GAIAM videos. I have Fibromyalgia due to a back injury. I believe that I would be bedfast now if I had not gotten on an exercise program.

  2. I am putting up my hands for the 100000000% support of this trend and ultimate movement!
