I’ve lived in New York my entire life yet I’ve never been in Times Square when the ball dropped. I’ve walked by the tourist zone shortly after the clock stuck 12 — wading through piles of confetti and trash — and partied a few blocks away, but I’ve always avoided the eye of the storm on the big night.
This year, New Yorkers in Times Square — and other parts of the great city — are being given given the gift of a safe rides home on New Year’s Eve from none other than Sean “Diddy” Combs.
The mogul and Ciroc premium vodka announced that they’ve partnered with the city Taxi & Limousine Commission to give away free cab rides to ring in 2009. Thousands of $15 debit cards, that can be redeemed for single taxi rides, will be handed out in Manhattan beginning at 11 p.m. on Wednesday night. They’ll be handed out until 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day or until the supply runs out.
“New York is the world’s most iconic New Year’s Eve city, so let’s lead by example and show everyone that a sophisticated holiday celebration doesn’t just end when the ball drops, but when everyone gets home safely,” Diddy told the New York Daily News.
While it’s not exactly the most eco-friendly gift the Didster could give the city (free rides on subways and buses would be cheaper and greener!), it’s nice that he’s looking out for the people partying in the city he grew up in.
Happy New Year’s to you and yours!
