Converted to Inverted: What It’s Like on an Inversion Table

I can’t believe how good it feels to be upside-down.

Working at Gaiam, we get to try some cool stuff. The Inversion Table [1] is very cool stuff. There are two of them in an open area, a little oasis near customer service where people go to meditate [2], read, stretch, whatever. Christine, who says she’s not needed massage or chiropractic nearly as much for her back [3] since she started inverting, showed me how to strap in. It’s much less intimidating than it appears — and wow, is it worth it.

How to use the Inversion Table

newproductphoto [4]You adjust the table for your height, and step onto the foot rests. You can keep your shoes on or take them off; it doesn’t make much of a difference. Tighten the ankle support so your legs feel snug and secure. Then you can either “walk” your hands up the handlebars or raise your arms over your head to invert yourself. The first time, you’ll probably want to go slowly. When you’re used to it, you’ll just flip upside down and flip back up!

For a few moments, it feels like you’ve got a stuffy nose, but that goes away pretty quickly. What you’ll really notice is the elongation of your spine. It’s gentler than cracking your back (eww!), and your spine will continue to lengthen and open up as you lie there upside down. Most people can invert for about three minutes. When you’re ready to come up, you move your arms back to your sides or climb your hands up the handlebars. So easy.

Why does inverting feel good?

You will feel taller immediately! And looser and more fluid and lithe. It feels like an anti-gravity pill with the caffeine-like boost of an afternoon latte. Amazing!

I’m a convert. And hopefully now I’ll never have to hear, “Mom, are you shrinking?”
