With deadly bushfires devastating Australia’s state of Victoria, many of the country’s biggest celebrities — from Anthony LaPaglia to Nicole Kidman are helping to raise money for the victims.
During a telethon yesterday to support the nearly 200 people who have died and hundreds more have been injured by the blazes, Nicole and her husband Keith Urban appeared via satellite to make a televised appeal to raise money for the Red Cross.
“As Australians, I think the biggest thing is that, no matter where you are in the world, we support each other and we rally,” the actress said. Then she announced that she and Keith would be donating $327,000 of their own money.
Other notable pledges came from Without a Trace star Anthony, who — along with his wife — donated $37,000.
Other celebrities soliciting donations include Orlando Bloom and his model-girlfriend Miranda Kerr, Russell Crowe, Naomi Watts, Hugh Jackman, Mel Gibson, Rachel Griffiths and Ellen DeGeneres (who is married to Australian actress Portia de Rossi).
So far, the broadcast has raised over $50 million to help those devastated by the inferno, which has also destroyed 2,000 homes and left 5,000 people homeless.
Police now believe that arsonists were responsible for at least two of the deadly fires.
With Valentine’s Day just one day away, keep the victims in your mind and send some love their way.
