Hyman-Screen-Shot-Web-ReadyThe horrors in Haiti hit me deeply, and I was compelled into action when the call came for doctors, surgeons and medical supplies to treat the hundreds of thousands of wounded.

There are few times in our lives when we can contribute to something larger than ourselves. Now, felt like one of those times for me.

With my wife and her father, both French-speaking orthopedic surgeons, and a small team of surgeons, nurses and critical care doctors from Mount Sinai in New York, and with the help of the Secretary of State and Paul Farmer, M.D., from Partners in Health, we were on one of the first planes with medical specialists on the ground.

Dr. Hyman and his wife Pier arrived in Port Au Prince on Friday night with a team of health care and human services providers to find the conditions to be absolutely horrific.

As you’ve no doubt heard, read about or seen on TV, it is a scene of death, devastation and chaos. The treatment facilities are crude at best, with medical teams working in make-shift operating rooms while facing shortages of medical resources – both personnel and supplies.

Communication is limited due to power outages, lack of cell service and limited satellite phone battery power, so we don’t expect to hear much from the team.
