Vote for the Compost Champ and You Could Win a Composter!

If you’re a Gaiam fan on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, or are a member of Gaia, you’ll recall that we recently asked for your input on how to make the best compost, best materials to use for composting, and suggestions on your favorite composters. Why, you may ask? Because we want to step up our selection of composting products to make it even better — and we want you to help us pick the next composter we should carry in our catalog.
Today we’re launching the first round of our Summer Compost-Off! Vote now for your favorite from four of the best composters you suggested, and you could be the lucky contestant who wins one of the composters below!
We’ll pit the top two finalists against each other in an epic head-to-head composting battle in our organic Gaiam Garden to find out which composter is the most efficient and boasts the best features.
Your votes will determine the composter most worthy for us to test and sell, and to help you choose, we’ll be posting video updates from our organic garden showing their progress (and composting prowess!). Don’t forget to sign up for newsletter updates when you vote, to see if you’ve won one of these composters!
Behold, the contenders:
The Bio-Orb
|
Green Cone
|
Worm Wigwam
|
Earthmaker

My vote goes for the Bio-Orb… It looks cool, and is probably something I would use more on a regular basis. Plus, I could probably train my dog to roll that thing around in the backyard to help me mix it up.
I prefer the Bio-Orb. Its shape assists in its function, to stir up the materials, oxygenate the materials, and I like its easy moveability.
I like the Bio Orb. It is not only the most economical but also is made in the United States.
We have a bio-orb and it’s horrible! You cannot turn it once it is full because it’s too heavy. If you do manage to wrestle it up, the lid does not seal well and flops off, spilling your half composted stuff.
I voted for the green cone, since it can take pet waste and meat!
Earthmaker . Not sure I’d trust the wigwam for keeping in the worms which can do a ton of damage to the environment if not properly contained.
I like the Earthmaker. As compost decomposes it falls to the bottom and therefore you can access it continuously.
the Earthmaker gets my vote but I also like the Green Cone style
we have tumbler one + it gets so heavy…
Would love to try the Earthmaker – looks practical and sturdy.
Earthmaker. I have a continuous rolling-bin type compost unit now that does not work well. I like the idea that it puts out continuous compost but does not require trying to rotate a big drum.
the green cone
i also voted for the bio-orb. what a great idea! and seems to be affordable. something that makes my decision. and also easily moved around. great idea
I like the Cone. I like the size, shape & how it works :) I could definitely see me using this composter
I voted for the worm bin (I love the idea!) but after reading these comments I’m starting to change my mind; the bio-orb might be easily as fun.
Can’t go wrong with the Earthmaker ;-) First one that caught my eye beside the Green Cone. Not into worms lol Would give to my older brother in Texas if I won it. Thank you.
I voted for the Wigwam. Living in central MN I’ve always struggled with how
to keep compost going through the winter. This looks like it would solve the problem and produce a good volume of compost.
The green cone, because it seems to take up the least amount of space.
One very enthusiastic vote for the BIO ORB! One thing about compost in general is being sure that the unit can me turned, rolled or mixed as the process occurs. The ball like structure would make composting a fun activity for my young children. What a great way to keep kids active by rolling the compost ball, as well as helping our beautiful world and garden at the same time. Thanks, Jesi!
I vote for the Earthmaker. I have two composters – older models but similar to the earthmaker – and find that even with 2 people in the household and a small garden, I need somthing big to hold all the green and brown materials. Even so, the composter gets filled fast. the other 3 composters would never be big enough.
I would love the Earth Maker, as it makes compost available on a regular basis. I don’t have the room to roll a ball or have two composters so I could use one while the other cooks.
I voted for the Green Cone because I like that it self-regulates temperature through insulation and that you only have to empty it once a year. I live in town and don’t need to use a huge amount of compost on our small yard, but I do like to reduce my landfill impact by composting, so I think this would be the best fit for me. I hope I win one!
I’ll vote for the Earthmaker. It looks like it might fit on my 2nd story deck.
I vote for the Cone.
Go for the Earthmaker! Sturdy, easy to turn, reasonably small footprint, and just plain classic. I’m composting in a corner, after all, not setting a fashion statement!
Thye Bio-Orb is-without a doubt- the best suitable for the task at hand. It would be much eaiser to handle, and move around in the garden without much physical effort. Even a small child can move it around for aeration purposes.
We’ve got a winner here!
The Bio-Orb is not recommended. It requires a lot of flat space to roll around, the lid is difficult to take off and put back on, and compost juice leaks out of the holes onto whoever is rolling in—I know maybe our compost technique isn’t ideal if we have juice, but that is because it is so hard to roll regularly in a sloping yard.
I voted for the Earth maker- I like the bio orb, but i have a spinning composter, and it DOES get very very heavy. Also, the latch holding the door on can’t stand up to the weight of the compost.
I looked up the composters at other sites to read personal experiences. I certainly do NOT want messy composting juice all over me as I roll a ball. People have said they are heavy and need a lot of space to roll. The worm unit is too expensive for a small family & people need to be careful to give worms the condition they need or else it is cruel to the worms. The cone doesn’t give usable compost, it just disposes of it.
So to get usable compost I voted for the Earthmaker.
Earthmaker! Since the Cone is already out of the running. I’m especially interested in a bin that can be placed on concrete in the courtyard of a NYC building and not need any other action. The green cone is interesting cause I like the camo green of it. Being in an urban environment I would like to hide the compost bin from curious prying hands full of fish heads or something.

[...] asking you to vote on four composters we selected from your suggestions, the first round of the Gaiam Compost-Off has come to a close and only two composters remain [...]
Earthmaker. As a petite woman, rolling or turning the ball would be too difficult and messy. The Earthmaker is most like the Aerobin that I have seen highly rated elsewhere.
My vote tips in favor of the Earthmaker. The name says everything positively. Break it down – earth maker – what could be simpler?
I’m casting my vote for the Earthmaker. It looks like it would be very practical in suburbia. It’s looks like something I could keep on the back porch for easy access.
