I'm getting ready to spend five days in retreat on the Big Island of Hawaii. I turned 40 this year and this was a gift to myself. There will be no tv or phones and much of the day will be spent in yoga, meditation and kirtan. Although I live on Oahu and have the natural beauty of Hawaii to draw from daily, I find that I still get caught up in the anxiety and stress of everyday living. It is important for me to take the time to reconnect with my deeper self through retreat. We all need to be reminded that there is a higher purpose in this life we live. We need space and time to recognize this.

I'm definitely into trips that aren't simply about going wild, or about not lifting a finger and relaxing the whole time. I definitely thing there is something to be said for trips that fall in the middle that are about something more than just marking off another country from the checklist. At this point in my life I'm not into spiritual trips necessarily, but I do like trips that are meaningful and about making connections with others as well as learning about myself.

Last year I went on a month long bike trip down the Oregon coast. No electricity, no television, camping under the stars every night. It was so amazingly refreshing and spiritually uplifting. The year before, I went on a week long trek through the high Andes in Peru. For me, the combination of physical exertion, nature, and quiet allows me to really come back to myself and my purpose.
