istock_000005074709smallI’m a sucker for love letters and chocolate, so it should come as no surprise that I look forward to Valentine’s Day. Show a little love for the planet and your partner by having an eco-friendly evening.

1. Eat an easy-on-the-planet meal

Make a reservation at a restaurant known for its organic and locally grown fare and be sure to order a bottle of your favorite organic wine. Or, cook dinner at home (Recipes from America’s Small Farms is filled with mouthwatering options), light a few soy or beeswax candles and enjoy a romantic evening.

2. Give a green gift

Opt for organic chocolates. Organic cocoa is grown under a shade canopy that helps maintain biodiversity and protect the habitat of migratory songbirds. Looking for something more extravagant? Consider buying a piece of estate jewelry. It’s the ultimate in reducing, reusing and recycling, and your sweetie will love receiving a beautiful piece of jewelry with an interesting history.

3. Relax at a green spa

Spas around the country offer treatments using organic and fair trade ingredients. Book an appointment to see how decadent eco-friendly luxury can be. Or, replicate the spa experience at home. Slip into an eco-fleece robe and try a little DIY reflexology (or have your partner give you a hand).

4. Write a tree-free love letter

Nothing says “I love you” like a handwritten love letter. There are lots of pretty recycled note cards to help you express exactly how you feel.
