4 Ways to Give the Gift of Fitness

The holiday season is once again upon us. And because I am one of those people who fully enjoys holiday dining , I have to prepare myself for the usual question that comes as I am stuffing my face: “How do you stay in shape?” One of the people who always asks me this question is my dear Aunt Jo. She asks it every year and then follows with how she wants to start working out and eating right .
So last holiday, I had a brilliant idea: I gave her a beginning workout basket. She said she wanted to get started after all! This basket included a water bottle , a workout towel, pedometer, heart rate monitor and several workout videos (none of mine; that was probably where I went wrong).
Well, it backfired. The first thing she said was, “Are you trying to say I’m fat?”
The gift was never mentioned again, and I have never seen any of the items from the basket in use. I felt terrible! Problem was, my aunt still wanted to work out and still needed to lose weight — and I still wanted to help her, but in a kinder, gentler way. How could I get my aunt to modify her diet and workout for weight loss without pushing too hard?
This year I changed tactics, and they seem to be working: My aunt recently purchased a treadmill that she uses on a regular basis. Because we all have at least one friend or family member who needs a little help in this area, I want to share my new strategies with you.
Because every time I get together with my family it is usually an eating bonanza, I try to set good examples by not eating and drinking too, too much. And I always make sure that my family understands that a great workout is never that far from our joyous celebration.
Because I know that I will eat more than usual when I am with my family, I always work out beforehand. I have now started to save my workout until I get to my aunt’s house. She lives in a beautiful, secluded neighborhood, and I often invite her to take a walk with me — she has not yet refused.
This year, I have vowed to maintain my weight and workout routine throughout the holiday season. I challenged my aunt as well as other family members to join me. We have decided there will some kind of prize, but we’re still working on what that will be.
I convinced my aunt to get her daughter a Wii fit, and I have caught my aunt using it several times. Often non-traditional forms of exercise work best. In fact, I have been caught engaging in one of my “private dance parties.” I routinely blast the music and just start dancing my heart out until I can’t anymore. Well, guess what? One day I arrived early to a family get together and caught my aunt having her own little “private dance party.” It may not change your body overnight, but it’s fun, and it is a great way to burn a few calories while adapting to fitness as a way of life .
Hopefully you can use some of these, and if you have any other ideas, I would love to hear them. If all else fails, we can always tell our family members about The FIRM’s free 30-day VIP membership .
