Modern life is a balancing act — work and play, family and personal time, spiritual and physical. How important is balance in your body — not just muscle balance but balance during movement?

Improving balance in movement will not only make it easier to stand on one foot while pulling on your favorite body-hugging jeans, it will also strengthen your core [2] and help prevent injuries through falls or sprains.

Balance exercises not only involve balance as we know it — standing on one leg, for example — they can also involve movement away and toward the midline of the body, lengthening the lever against the core muscles — not only the abs, but also the hips and shoulder girdle — which fire to maintain or stabilize your center of gravity.

The exercise routine in the above video have two components — in addition to the specific muscle groups they target:

1. They involve single leg or another form of balanced stances.
2. They recruit core muscles with long lever motions, but also in some cases, through twisting motions.
