In one of my first jobs out of college (at a magazine that shall remain nameless) I sat near one of the senior editors, who — when he wasn’t sleeping at his desk (he actually snored!) — would cut his finger nails every Friday. While I sat — trying to concentrate — in my cubicle, he was perched in his superplush office clip, clip, clipping away.
It drove me bonkers. But I’m all about public clipping for a good cause! …
Alanis Morissette does just that in a new laugh-out-loud public service announcement for the World Wildlife Fund’s upcoming Earth Hour event. In it, the “Ironic” singer clips her toenails in the first-class section of an airplane — to the dismay of the guy sitting next to her — while talking about “turn offs.” It’s a lead-in to the global Earth Hour event March 28 at 8:30 p.m., during which hundreds of millions of people in more than 1,000 cities in 80 countries will turn off their lights for one hour.
Basically you can “vote Earth” by turning your lights off for one hour or “vote global warming” by leaving your lights on. The results of the “election” will be presented at the 2009 Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.
I don’t know where I’ll be yet at 8:30 p.m. on March 28, but my lights will be out. Will yours? Talk back below.
