Aging Gracefully: I’m Gonna Do It or Die Trying

Last week I volunteered at Auden’s preschool during the eye screening exam. I sat beside each child and covered one eye at a time as they read the chart. The kids did great. Sadly, I did not. I could barely see the chart.

That little incident caused me to take a look at other areas that I thought were declining. While I could barely see the eye chart, I can clearly see that I no longer have hair by my temples — which explains why the make-up artist at the last shoot felt the need to “color” in my temples. I routinely call John “Auden” and Auden “John.” I no longer enjoy driving at night. I can never find my keys or shoes in the morning. And I won’t even go into the night sweats.

So, I Googled the signs of aging, and this is what I found:

  1. Menopause: Check (well, at least peri-menopause)
  2. Balding: Check
  3. Graying: Not yet
  4. Skin changes: Check
  5. Slight mental decline: Check
  6. Slight memory loss: Check
  7. Eye changes: Check
  8. Reading difficulty: Check
  9. Hearing loss: Check
  10. Vaginal changes: Now that’s personal
  11. Wisdom: Thankfully, check, check, check!

Based on the number of checks I had, I guess I am officially aging. But I am determined to do it gracefully — I am not going down without a fight!

With my regular exercise and healthy diet, I have a pretty good start. I don’t smoke, and I don’t drink… too much! I’m not a party person. I get lots of sleep. And I am happy — very happy. Actually, while I might be aging, I am happier now than I was at age twenty.

So, who’s on board? Who else is not going to let this aging thing get the best of them? Hey, there is nothing wrong with aging, but I would much rather be like a fine wine … and get better with time.

  1. Yes, you have said it correctly. With your regular exercise and healthy diet, no smoking and no drinking and getting lots of sleep and having a mental outlook of feeling happier than at the age of twenty, you are going to cheat yourself on your look and age as days go by. Wish you all the best. The author of this small note is runnig 84 and is as fit as a fiddle is. His habits are as good as what is mentioned in this note and nobody can correctly guess his age. All take him to be one far below 84. From T.S.Sundaram
