A New Year’s Resolution a Lazy Person Can Love

Our culture places a lot of emphasis on dramatic new year’s resolutions. We all want to lose 20 pounds, quit smoking, or make it to five yoga classes a week. If you’re a person who thrives on big challenges, by all means, shoot for the stars! But I know for myself, if I suffer a couple of setbacks on the path toward an ambitious goal, I’m all too ready to give up and go lie on the couch.
As a writer, I spend a lot of time in front of the computer. And now that I’m a mom and I don’t have as much time at my disposal to go to yoga class, my body is paying the price. Although I’d love to be able to commit to making it to five yoga classes a week, I know that I’d just be setting myself up for failure. Instead, I’ve resolved to simply move more — including running as many errands as possible on foot, doing 15 minutes of yoga while I wait for the oatmeal to cook, and taking a walk when the afternoon slump hits. It’s not ideal, perhaps, but it’s doable. And, it works. Already my neck is less achy, my energy level is more vibrant, and my ability to deal with inevitable daily stresses is on the rise.
Looking for a way to build a little more movement in to your chair-centric day? Here’s a great Seated Sun Salutation from Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman’s DVD The Practical Power of Yoga . It’s a great example of how you don’t have to have a big chunk of time or even a cute yoga outfit to benefit from a physical practice. You could even do it right now. C’mon, I dare you!
